In the face of a challenging history and future,

Fiery Canoe's mission is to support, safeguard, and promote Banaban culture, well being and heritage.

The story of Banaba is a cautionary but ultimately inspiring tale for all humanity. Rich in phosphate deposits used for agriculture, this small island in the Pacific underwent unsustainable resource extraction that destroyed critical resources and the island’s ability to sustain life. Following Japanese occupation during World War II, Banabans’ displacement to war camps, and finally their mass relocation to Rabi in the Fiji Islands, now fewer than 300 people remain on their ancestral island. And yet, against all odds the 7,000-strong diasporic Banaban community maintains a vibrant culture, fights for reparations, and forms a bulwark against climate change. They need our support…
